Trader Joe’s Matcha Joe-Joe’s

Have you ever experienced the flavor of a matcha green tea latte in a cookie? Well, that’s what you’ll get with the new Matcha Joe-Joe’s from Trader Joe’s.

If you’re not familiar with matcha, it’s basically a concentrated powdered green tea. It’s gotten pretty popular among Millennials, but it’s definitely an acquired taste. You really need to love green tea to fully enjoy matcha, since with matcha you’re actually drinking the powdered leaves as opposed to steeping them. Matcha tea is also specially farmed and processed — but if you want to know more about that, you can read about it here.

So back to the cookies. Joe-Joe’s are the Trader Joe’s equivalent of Oreos, basically just sandwich cookies. Seasonally TJ’s will release a variety of different flavors of them, and they can really be hit or miss. (For example, I wasn’t a fan of their pumpkin Joe-Joe’s, but I love their wintertime peppermint Joe-Joe’s). Matcha must’ve been their take on spring since I just noticed them while I was shopping last week.

If you’re looking for a super sweet cookie, this isn’t the one for you. I was even a bit surprised at how dominant the matcha flavor was in the creme! The cookies have a light vanilla flavor, and the combination really does translate to the taste of a creamy matcha latte. They’re pretty crumbly rather than crisp, so upon opening the box a lot of them already had cracks. These might serve pretty well as a cookie crumble on ice cream, or in a riff on a matcha milkshake.

Overall, I enjoy these cookies, but that’s mainly because I’m a matcha fan. You really need to know what to expect before digging in, otherwise, you might find the flavor a bit off-putting. For only around $3 a box, I’d say they’re worth a buy — especially because Trader Joe’s has an unconditional return policy! Or even ask a crewmember if you can have a sample in-store, they’re willing to let you try anything food-safe before purchase. (Learn more about some of the great perks of shopping at TJ’s here).
